Marion (McHugh) Woodcock
January 24, 1932, to April 7, 2024
Marion passed away in her home surrounded by her family and the love of close friends and neighbors on April 7, 2024, after a period of declining health. She is the daughter of Irish immigrants, the late Martin and Catherine McHugh of Watertown and Newton. Marion was 92 years young.
Marion graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Newton and stayed active in the alumni group for many years. She worked as an up-and-coming corporate Manager for New England Telephone & Telegraph. Marion willingly gave up a thriving career to dedicate her time to caring for her aging parents and taking a significant role in the upbringing of her niece and nephew.
Marion was married to her husband Curt for over 52 years. Marion and Curt were truly a “Love story for the Ages”. They were Ying and Yang. They shared a deep love and commitment to each other; family was the center of their world as they were both “quintessential caretakers”. Marion was from the true “McGuire and McHugh stock” which is characterized by women of deep faith, generosity, strong personality, and the ability to bark out orders from dawn to dusk. Curt and the rest of us complied with Marion’s orders out of love and admiration.
In the last dozen years, as Marion was less mobile, most of her daily joy and laughter came from visits from her devoted friend and close sparring partner Anna P. Marion relished in the encouraging and supportive phone calls from her sister Margie and brother John while tolerating the daily nagging phone calls from her niece, Debbie.
Marion shared stories of growing up in Newton and Watertown and of her close relationship and fondness of her devoted cousins and friends Mary Farrell and Mary Mullahey both of Watertown.
Marion was devoted and proud of her Irish heritage and Christian faith. Marion watched the Catholic Mass on TV, several times a day. In times, of better health Marion attended and was involved in support groups at St. Agnes Church. Marion was well known and liked by her close neighbors in Arlington Heights-especially, Ginny, Leo, Mary, Sandy, Lily, and the late Widow Wing.
In addition to her late husband, Curt Woodcock, Marion leaves her loving sister Margaret and her husband Michael O'Neill of Virginia, her brother the late John McHugh and his wife Ellen of Sandwich and her sister the late Elinor Sylvester of Belmont.
Marion also leaves several devoted and loving nieces, nephews, and godchildren. They include:
Debbie Sylvester and her spouse Terri SooHoo of Salem, the late Francis Sylvester of Belmont, John and Tina McHugh of Needham, Marybeth Carlisle of Duxbury, Tracy and Mike Hewett of Duxbury, Meghan and Michael Grimaldi of Duxbury, Kathleen, and David King of Florida. Marion was the proud godparent to John McHugh, Jr of Needham, Kathleen & Katherine King of Florida, and Eileen Burke of Burlington.
Marion’s primary goal over the last few years was to stay independent in her home and complete her life. This journey was only made possible due to her devoted and kind caretakers, which included Anna P., Claudia, Mary, Liz, Brittney, and Sandy just to name a few….
Marion was truly fortunate to have professional, caring and invested healthcare providers over many years. They included Amanda Berling, MD, Katy Goldlist, MD, Christina Allen, NP and Aram Tomasion, MD.
Our family wants to acknowledge and give special thanks to the team at Good Sheppard Community Care who provided care for Marion in holistic way, medically, socially, and spiritually over the past several months. Her care team included Allison, NP, Winney, Joanne, Stephanie, Sharon and Jenny.
